Intellectual Property, Consumer Protection & the Sneaker Reselling Market

Delving into IP, consumer protection and the sneaker reselling market while writing this article with Zi-Han Lim 林子翰 was fun and interesting.

Besides other legal issues that we raised, the usage and authorisation concerning trademarks and product logos are serious considerations for businesses. They are not restricted to sneakers but affect all products and industries, for that matter.

Reach out if you have thoughts or questions on these issues to get you and your business off to a “running start” 👟.

International Certificate Program: The Lifecycle of a Trademark

As an International Trademark Association (INTA)‘s “The Lifecycle of a Trademark” International Certificate Program instructor, becoming the teacher instead of a student was equally a learning experience.

The program focuses on registration processes and protection measures to secure trademarks through searches, practical applications and real-world case studies in various countries and regions. Topics include Preliminary clearance, Full searches, Costs, Regional Treaties, Usage, Overcoming Objections, Renewals, Protection and Licensees/Registered users.

Certainly learnt much from fellow instructors and members from different jurisdictions.

Feel free to reach out regarding the issue of trademark registrations and protection with a worldwide perspective. Details of the program are at https://lnkd.in/eF6_msmE

Temasek Polytechnic IP Forum – Intellectual Properties & E-commerce

It was a pleasure being back in the Lion City to speak about Intellectual Properties & E-commerce at the Temasek Polytechnic IP Forum. Many thanks to Annie Perumpoykail Gomez, Daniel Ng and Aaron Ong for organising the Forum with such dedication and inviting me.

The other Artificial Intelligence, Non-Fungible Tokens and the Metaverse sessions as well as Q&A panel discussion with my fellow speakers Benjamin Ang, Ankur Gupta and Pin-Ping Oh raised intriguing questions like “Who owns the IP?” and “Who is liable for infringement?” under these emerging technologies. It also invites much needed regulatory and case law developments not only in the ASEAN region, but also worldwide.

Eager to continue keeping up with and exchanging views on such current issues. Do reach out to share thoughts or opportunities of collaborating in this space. Till next time again, Singapore…

International Trademark Association (INTA) Unreal Campaign – INTA Annual Meeting 2023 in Singapore

Across the straits for an International Trademark Association (INTA) Unreal Campaign presentation in conjunction with the INTA Annual Meeting 2023 in Singapore!

Thanks to Temasek Polytechnic and Annie Perumpoykail Gomez for having me as well as our committee members Pui Keng Lim, Roberta Calazans, Aprajita Nigam and Yoshi Masutani.

Broadened my horizons by garnering a Singaporean perspective on counterfeits and why trademarks matter to the audience. Also shared a brief Malaysian legal perspective and experiences in cases involving international and South East Asian counterfeit “black market” syndicates including Singapore for a cross-border comparison.

Trust that it helped to raise awareness among the audience while I delved into the minds of overseas consumers. Excited for more future opportunities to exchange views.
